For this months ‘Day in the Life’, we’re chatting to our newest member of the Sales Team, Lacey-May about her first couple of months here at Waltet – what she used to do before venturing into waste management and a hobby that may just surprise you!
Q. Describe your role at Waltet – your job title and what the role entails.
A: I am one of the Sales Administrators here at Waltet. My job primarily involves taking phone calls, replying to emails, taking skip and aggregate orders, applying to local councils for skip permits and actioning our lovely customer’s enquiries.
Q: How long have you been working at Waltet?
A: I started at Waltet eight weeks ago (in May 2024), previous to being here I worked in the community with the elderly as a carer. I also trained to be a HLTA (Higher Level Teaching Assistant) and spent a few years working in a primary school – so this is all new to me, but I am loving it so far!
Q: What’s the first task you usually tackle when you arrive at the office?
A: I will go through my emails first and action any orders that have come in overnight. All orders are important, regardless of if they are commercial or domestic, big or small, so it’s about balancing it out and ensuring everything has been actioned to a good timescale.
Q: What is it about the waste recycling industry that interests you?
A: I find it really interesting how the majority of the waste that we collect is recycled down at Bunny Lane, which then reduces the amount going to landfill.
Q: What are your favourite aspects of your job?
A: I really enjoy speaking to customers on the phone and working alongside my colleagues in the office. Having a work/life balance is really important to me, which I get here.
Q: What are the main challenges you typically encounter in your role, and how do you overcome them?
A: When customers call in asking where their skip is. However, sometimes due to traffic and breakdowns this can change from an AM delivery to a PM delivery- which can also push their work back so they can get quite frustrated with us on the phone. We do anything and everything in our power to ensure that the customer gets what they want and when they need it.
Q: Have you noticed any changes in the industry since you joined the business? Do you see any major changes for the industry in the future? And if so, how do you think Waltet can tackle them?
A: With our new wash plant, we are able to provide companies with recycled material options which is much better for the environment.
Q: What do you find most rewarding about your job?
A: Being able to support customer with their needs. Personally, there are plenty of opportunities to progress further within the company as I have seen with Dani and Lewis recently being promoted.
Q: What is it like working with the team at Waltet?
A: A great laugh! We all get on so well even when it’s very stressful. We all muck in and help each other at any time if needed. Everyone is so friendly, it’s definitely a little work family even in the short time that I have been here – everyone has made me feel so welcome.
Q: Do you have any opportunities for professional development or learning as part of your job?
A: I’m in the process of learning all the materials down to a T now that I have mastered the skip side of things! Lewis knows all the ins and outs of aggregates so he is training me up on this.
Q: In your opinion what three words describe Waltet as a business?
A: Reliable. Willing. Fun.
Q: Share a fact about you that may surprise people.
A: On the weekends, I jump in my 1ltr Stock Car and go racing! I started this hobby when I was just 11 years old when I learnt to drive in my dad’s Citroen Berlingo van and I have loved it every since, I have even got my little boy into it…
