Day in the life of Kat, Transport Coordinator
For this months ‘Day in the Life’, we’re staying at the Nursling office for a convo with our Transport Coordinator, Katharine Dale. Kat tells us what it’s like working in the busy transport department here at Waltet…and her secret fact, that may well surprise some of you!
Q. Describe your role at Waltet – your job title and what the role entails.
A: I work within the Transport department here at Waltet as a Transport Coordinator. The main part of my role is routing drivers work for the next day and of course, handling any issues whenever and wherever they arise! I spend quite a lot of time speaking with other companies who may be subcontracting our vehicles. I also ensure the maintenance and compliance of all of our vehicles are up-to-date, which is a really important part of my job.
Q: How long have you been working at Waltet?
A: I started working here 18 months ago, I joined in August 2022. Before here, I worked in a food wholesale company and prior to that a ‘posh’ supermarket!
Q: What’s the first task you usually tackle when you arrive at the office?
A:I usually start my day finding out if there are any issues that have arisen on the early morning shift. After that, it’s checking what the next day looks like in terms of driver availability and if any of the trucks will be off the road for the day. This then helps me to work through how the next day will be planned. You’ll often find me working a day ahead!
Q: What is it about the waste recycling industry that interests you?
A: For me, it’s knowing that everything isn’t just going to end up in landfill and that things can be recycled and reused.
Q: What are the main challenges you typically encounter in your role, and how do you overcome them?
A: Overloaded skips or access to skips is the most frequent challenge that we come up against. I’ll often be speaking to customers to arrange a day or time to suit them and fit everyone’s schedules in!
Q: What do you find most rewarding about your job?
A: Resolving a problem when it arises. So I get many rewards 😉
Q: What is it like working with the team at Waltet?
A: No day is ever the same, but we all work together to get through any tasks or challenges that arise.
Q: Do you have any opportunities for professional development or learning as part of your job?
A: Within Waltet there are always opportunities for development and learning no matter what role you have.
Q: In your opinion what three words describe Waltet as a business?
A: Conscientious, Caring, Family
Q: Share a fact about you that may surprise people.
A: In my free time I enjoy doing Archery, Axe Throwing and Air Pistols. I own 8 Bows and enjoy it so much I even did Archery at my wedding!
