Day in the life of Daryll, Transport Director
For this months ‘Day in the Life’, we’re headed to the Nursling office for a convo with our Transport Director, Daryll English, who tells us what it’s like running the busy transport department here at Waltet.
Q. Describe your role at Waltet – your job title and what the role entails.
A: I’m the Transport Director here at Waltet which means I oversee the day-to-day running of the vehicles (planning, legal compliance and maintenance), managing our team of drivers as well as liaising with our customers and other hauliers.
Q: How long have you been working at Waltet?
A: I have been working at Waltet since September 2021. Before here, I worked as an assistant manager for a ready mix mortar company.
Q: What’s the first task you usually tackle when you arrive at the office?
A: My first task dealing with any overnight messages and emails before the drivers leave for the day. I do have a schedule I follow but being in the transport industry there are so many variables that this can change by the time I’ve managed to make my first cup of tea!
Q: What is it about the waste recycling industry that interests you?
A: It’s ever changing and no two days are the same, new challenges and scenarios pop up every day. It definitely keeps us on our toes! With new rules and ways of working popping up regularly you always need to be on the ball to make sure that as a company we are being compliant.
Q: What are the main challenges you typically encounter in your role, and how do you overcome them?
A: The main challenges are typically breakdowns and traffic. Always unexpected and usually happen at the worst possible time! We always try to have a back up plan for every day so that we can maintain the high service level our customers have come to expect.
Q: Have you noticed any remarkable changes in the industry since you joined the business? Do you see any major changes for the industry in the future?
A: The industry is changing with new rules and regulations coming into force all of the time. I think the industry is going to be a lot more recycling based with many major suppliers trying to go green. Our wash plant, recycling facilities and team can help customers and suppliers to achieve these standards.
Q: What do you find most rewarding about your job?
A: Being able to serve my local area and help the overall environment with our commitment to recycling.
Q: What is it like working with the team at Waltet?
A: A pleasure! Although a tough and stressful job at times, everyone does their best to help everyone out and there is a really great atmosphere among all the staff which certainly makes the day go quicker!
Q: Do you have any opportunities for professional development or learning as part of your job?
A: I completed my Transport Managers CPC whilst working here and I’m always learning from colleagues skills’ and experiences.
Q:In your opinion what three words describe Waltet as a business?
A: Reliable. Innovative. Fun.
Q: Share a fact about you that may surprise people.
A: Outside of work I try to keep as fit as possible and really enjoy my running. In the next couple of months I am due to start training for the Berlin marathon!
