Day in the life of Vijay Burner, Site Worker
For this months ‘Day in the Life’, we’ caught up with Vijay Burner down at our Bunny Lane site.
Q. Describe your role at Waltet – your job title and what the role entails.
A: I have a few roles here at Waltet. I help with labouring at the wash plant and the picking line, and will assist to operate the weighbridge when needed too!
Q: How long have you been working at Waltet?
A:I started at Waltet in December 2023 – can you imagine being at Bunny Lane in the Winter? Chilly and very muddy. It does mean I’ve seen the worse and everything other season is a bonus!
Before coming here I had varied roles including working within children’s care and a long stint as a Prison Officer. I have been fortune to have a career in the music industry too of which I’m still active and really enjoy.
Q: What’s the first task you usually tackle when you arrive at the office?
A: If I am in the office, I would normally set up each programme and take a look at the days tasks with Sophie. If I’m out on site, I pull on my safety boots, hi-vis and helmet and get straight to it!
Q: What is it about the waste recycling industry that interests you?
A:The potential for positive impacts on the environment.
Q: What are your favourite aspects of your job?
A: I really enjoy being on the weighbridge and greeting customers and staff. I enjoy working with every one down at the washplant too. Overall, it’s great team here at Bunny!
Q: What are the main challenges you typically encounter in your role, and how do you overcome them?
A: Trying to keep every thing flowing smoothly and dealing with customers promptly and efficiently can be challenging on busy days. It’s so important for us to let people know we are endeavouring to assist them as quickly as possible – when sometimes behind the scenes it can be crazy!
Q: Have you noticed any changes in the industry since you joined the business? Do you see any major changes for the industry in the future? And if so, how do you think Waltet can tackle them?
A: With our wash plant, there is enormous potential to make serious changes within the recycling and waste industry.
Q: What do you find most rewarding about your job?
A: I love the daily interactions and banter with every one – from Richie and Jon at the washplant, to the team in the office and the guys on the ground.
Q: What is it like working with the team at Waltet?
A: The team are so friendly and are always up for a laugh, which definitely helps the days go quickly.
Q: Do you have any opportunities for professional development or learning as part of your job?
A: Yes, definitely. I have been here under a year and already my role has evolved to being able to work within other areas of the business. The training I have had on the weighbridge has given me a new string to my bow.
Q: In your opinion what words describe Waltet as a business?
A: Customer driven. Adaptable.
Q: Share a fact about you that may surprise people.
A:I have worked in music for over 25 years, being lucky enough to play in many different countries. I am also a songwriter and multi instrumentalist and singer. I have just released an EP and video and can often be found playing in various bands around the country on weekends.
