National Apprenticeship Week 2023
Lewis Wyatt started his journey as an Apprentice in 2020 as a Level 2 Customer Service Practitioner at Waltet Materials Ltd.
Waltet Materials is one of the leading waste recycling companies in Southampton, offering Skip hire, Grab, and Tipper Hire and Materials for commercial and domestic customers. We offer services in Southampton and the surrounding area.
What started as a completely new venture for Lewis after school, ended up unlocking his professional calling. Fast forward to 2023, Lewis is now a successful Aggregates and Planning sales Representative who has grown and driven our materials revenue.
In this blog, we will follow Lewis’s journey from Apprentice to Business Sales Representative.
WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE THE APPRENTICESHIP ROUTE?
I never really enjoyed school and wanted a new challenge. I thought the best thing for me was to work full-time and get a qualification. That’s where Waltet stood out. After my first full day, I could tell I was part of “The Waltet Family”. I was given many opportunities and had multiple one to ones which really helped me develop and learn new things.
WHAT WERE YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES AS AN APPRENTICE?
When I first started the first couple of months were seeing how Waltet operated and learning the Waltet way. This eventually developed where I was helping by answering the phone taking orders and processing orders. I then started gaining confidence and started reaching out to new companies and offering our services.
HOW DID YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES EVOLVE OVER TIME?
As mentioned the first few months were learning the industry and how Waltet operated. It then progressed into taking / processing orders. I was then brought into the world of road planings. Once I was taught this I was like a Jack Russell with a bone, I just wanted to sell road planings and speak with local farmers and businesses. I liked the challenge of having to reach out to people and sell planings. I now work on Skips / Aggregates and Planings so don’t hesitate to contact me if you need anything.
LOOKING BACK AT YOUR JOURNEY, HOW DID AN APPRENTICESHIP HELP YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?
Waltet has given me many opportunities and has grown my confidence massively. If you told me when I first started, I would be constantly meeting new people and tasked with selling Aggregates/skips/planings, etc. I would have laughed. However, the training that I was given has grown me into the person I am now. It has also given me confidence outside of work I’m not as shy and love meeting new people.
WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THE APPRENTICESHIP ROUTE TO OTHER PEOPLE INTERESTED IN A CAREER IN IT?
I would definitely recommend getting an apprenticeship at Waltet as you are offered so many opportunities and you will be constantly learning every day. You get a qualification, and this will help you later in life. It is the best decision I have ever made.
